Jeanine Marissal, a biologist, discovered in 1952 that the unique benefits that plankton from the Pyrenean thermal waters gave to the skin could be utilized to create Biotherm, a line of skincare products.

The science of Biotherm, which began with spa water plankton, has since expanded to include thermal waters, glaciers, lakes, rivers, other natural resources, and microorganisms. It has also become an aquatic brand to help people discover "vitality from the deep waters to deep inside the skin."
